Master Drawings 2008 AnnouncedThe 8th annual Master Drawings event will take place between 5-11 of July, featuring leading dealers who will showcase drawings of an international scope from the 15th century to the present day. Twenty exhibitors throughout St. James’s and Mayfair will open their galleries individually for this exciting week, testifying to the strength of the drawings market in London. A newcomer to Master Drawings, John Martin of London, will host works by British artist Chris Hipkiss, who, after exhibiting everywhere from Moscow to Santa Fe, returns to Britain armed with his triptych landscape, Your Wayward Chit, a detailed drawing full of beguiling characters and text—a true celebration of contemporary craftsmanship. Also new to the event are Michael Tollemache Fine Art, who will be exhibiting jointly with Brussels-based dealer Jan de Maere, and drawings dealer James Mackinnon. For the first time Master Drawings London is opening its doors to overseas dealers and is delighted to welcome, New York-based specialist Jill Newhouse, who will exhibit 19th and 20thcentury European works, expanding the international scope of the fair to appeal to a wider audience of dealers and collectors, particularly, in America. A fourth-generation art dealer, Jill participates regularly in the Salon du Dessin, making Master Drawings London a logical step. Connaught Brown will show a selection of 20th-century works, including an ink-on-paper Picasso from the summer of 1952, depicting the wife of painter Edouard Pignon on the Côte d'Azur, while Theobald Jennings will present a group of Berlin dadaist George Grosz nude drawings directly from the artist’s estate, showcasing the diversity of the ‘modern masters’ at the event. Stephen Ongpin will display a Freud drawing of a neighbour’s boy who met the artist upon breaking into his London flat, later becoming one of Freud’s favourite models, and an illustrated letter from Edouard Manet to an important collector. Stoppenbach & Delestre Ltd will exhibit French watercolours of the late 19th-century by satirist Jean-Louis Forain and Hippolyte PetitJean, while Emanuel von Baeyer will exhibit the books, prints, and letters of Ambroise Vollard, an important dealer who nurtured the careers of many Parisian artists of the same era. Crispian Riley-Smith, the founder of Master Drawings, will exhibit specially-commissioned botanical watercolours by John Pastoriza-Piñol and Evelyn Binns, both of whom participated in Prince Charles’ Highgrove Florilegium , and by Bridget Gillespie. Andrew Clayton-Payne showcases a loan exhibition of works on paper by Victorian artist Richard Dadd, who created many of his works while incarcerated in the Bethlem Hospital. Trinity Fine Art will exhibit the figure drawings of Italian sculptor Vincenzo Gemito, who also suffered a mental breakdown in the late 19th-century. Lowell Libson will present a rare Thomas Gainsborough chalk drawing from the 1770s, and W/S Fine Art Ltd.’s exhibition British Works on Paper will also feature drawings from 1750-1850, including works by John Constable and J.M.W. Turner. For Old Masters, Agnew’s will show a 16th-century landscape drawing by Paul Bril that represents January in the Twelve Months of the Year series, six of which are now in the Louvre. This will also be the debut year of the afternoon Gallery Tours, which will focus on distinct themes in drawing and be led by acknowledged experts in these fields. Yet even a solitary stroll through this lovely area reveals Master Drawings as the summer’s secret blockbuster exhibition—a rare opportunity to see the finest works of London’s most acclaimed dealers.
